My opinion on proteins to solve hair loss

The reason I decided to write this article is precisely because I've been facing this problem.

 

I've always experienced a fair amount of hair loss, but I've reached a truly alarming stage where my hair is thinning. I started to see my scalp when I styled it, and I noticed my hairline receding. I had lost density, which I also noticed when I tied it up, like with a ponytail.

 

I searched for solutions online, consulted my doctor, and as is often the case... I didn't find any methods that worked for me. Zinc supplements made me sick and were completely ineffective, and were castor oil and shampoos containing it also had no effect.

As I've written in other articles, I've been running quite regularly for several years. Little by little, I realized that I was finding it increasingly difficult to run and recover afterward. One weekend I was completely lethargic, as if drained of all energy. I also had problems with low blood pressure. It was only when I made the connection between protein, muscles, exercise, and hair and nails that I understood where the problem came from.

 

I wasn't consuming enough protein in my diet, so I wasn't nourishing my muscles sufficiently. I don't eat much meat, fish, or eggs, and I don't eat dairy products or other plant-based foods that contain protein either. Instead, I eat fruit, vegetables, and cereal products...

 

Finding it difficult to change my eating habits overnight and wanting quick results, I turned to whey isolate protein powders. I started taking one shake a day (about 20g of protein) and two shakes a day when I was exercising...

 

Believe it or not, I felt revitalized from the very first week. I had energy again, my blood pressure improved, and my usual muscle aches completely disappeared.

I knew the results wouldn't come quickly, but I wanted to believe. So I started taking protein powders in June and finally saw regrowth in September. In just three months, my hair started growing back! It was kind of my last hope, and I didn't think I was that protein deficient.

 

Since then, I've been consuming less powder and trying to eat at least one Skyr yogurt a day, a few pieces of cheese, and some almonds/cashews if I'm not eating any other foods that are really rich in protein. My hair is now healthy, and thanks to this signal my body sent me, I am in much better health overall. Have you ever experienced similar symptoms? Tell me more in the comments of the blog post.

My opinion on collagen supplements

I discovered these supplements during a facial treatment. The practitioner recommended using collagen to help my skin produce it, since we produce less and less as we age (hence the appearance of wrinkles...).

 

I found the idea interesting, but I wondered how consuming fish scraps—bones, skin, and scales—could possibly help my skin produce collagen?

 

I have to admit that I haven't found any scientific evidence that consuming this "collagen" actually increases collagen production. Instead, I've found marketing claims devoid of any basis or valid proof of effectiveness. I even think that, not really knowing what we're consuming, it could even have negative effects on our health. Indeed, apart from these supplements, we do not even eat this type of waste, we remove it from the fish before consuming them, don't we?

My opinion on sport and skin beauty

I try to run regularly, ideally 2 to 3 times a week for an hour at a comfortable pace, prioritizing duration over intensity.

My goal is to relieve stress and feel good, but also to exert myself long enough to rid my body of accumulated toxins.

 

What I've noticed: firstly, my skin is noticeably softer, both on my body and face. It's also less "bubbly" since fat is burned during exercise. This also has a very beneficial impact on cellulite, which is gradually disappearing.

 

Exercise also tends to slim my face and burn fat in my upper eyelids, which tend to droop with age (so I look younger, but I have to tirelessly continue exercising... unless I resort to surgery – blepharoplasty!). I also noticed that my skin is smoother and more beautiful, and that's when I became interested in the scientific evidence of the benefits of exercise on the skin, the effects of which are well-proven, for an activity that costs absolutely nothing! Except for motivation...

My opinion on Vitamin C cosmetics

I regularly use Dermaceutic C25 Cream or Eneomey Daylight C20, depending on what I find at the pharmacy.

As for application, I prefer to use these creams in the evening to avoid photosensitivity and having to apply another cream, like sunscreen, on top.

 

The sensation isn't particularly pleasant because the active ingredient causes a tingling feeling. However, the result I notice is refined skin texture the next morning and a rather radiant complexion. On the other hand, I couldn't say whether my sunspots improve with the use of these products.

 

The main benefit I've noticed is the gentle exfoliating effect, which is pleasant when applying other creams and makeup in the morning. Furthermore, by alternating with other cosmetics containing Glycolic Acid, I have abandoned mechanical scrubs and my skin texture is even all week, without resorting to an aggressive process.

My opinion on hyaluronic acid

Personally, I've tried it in both its cosmetic and injectable forms.

Using various serums of different qualities and compositions, I never noticed my skin being plumped in any way. There was no particular effect on my wrinkles, which continued to deepen. That's when I started trying to understand why it wasn't working... and I realized it was more of a marketing ploy than a truly proven effect, as the molecules are too large to penetrate the skin and actually rehydrate it. However, on a daily basis I use a cream that contains it (Hyal Ceutic) because it moisturizes well without making the skin oily.

 

Following my research and consultations with cosmetic doctors, I did, however, understand that hyaluronic acid can have real rehydrating effects to smooth wrinkles if injected. I found it particularly effective for nasolabial folds and for lifting the cheekbones, provided it's injected in the right amount and in the right place. The trick is to insist with the doctor on a subtle and natural result.

 

Regarding price, depending on the areas injected, I paid €300 for the nasolabial folds and tear troughs, and €450 for the nasolabial folds plus the cheekbones. For my last procedure, the result was a bit rough for the first month but became more harmonious afterward, with a real smoothing of my wrinkles in the nasolabial folds, which, in my opinion, are what ages the face the most between 35 and 45. The filler is supposed to last 12 to 18 months, but I waited 24 months between the two procedures. The injections allowed my skin to slow down the aging process.

 

From an effectiveness and budget standpoint, I therefore prefer to invest once a year or every two years in good hydration through injections, with an immediate and very visible effect, rather than using expensive cosmetics with no real impact.

My opinion on turmeric supplements

First of all, I find it surprising that some practitioners recommend, or even prescribe, this type of supplement. The effects of turmeric are based primarily on beliefs and not on sufficiently documented empirical studies.

 

Furthermore, I've read that adverse effects have been reported by many consumers, sometimes even leading to more serious conditions such as hepatitis (see the Vidal article on this subject).

 

Having done my research before considering supplementation, I realized that the only benefit accrued to the laboratories manufacturing these supplements, and probably to the practitioners who prescribe them… So I've never taken them.
